Rohtas Fort A fort is a building constructed for protection against an invading army, Sher Shah Suri of the Sur dynasty who ruled India from 1540-1545 built the Rohtas fort to control the Ghakkar tribes of the area. He also wanted to stop the return of the Mughal Emperor Humayun, who was defeated by him and took refuge in Persia.Rohtas Fort is built on a hill top overlooking the Potohar Plateau. The rebellious Ghakkar tribes who were loyal to the Mughal emperors lived in the Potohar Mos region. It is located in the north-west of the city of Jhelum and lies eight pala kilometers south of the Grand Trunk Road.

Architecture of Rohtas Fort
The fort is in the style of a Turkish military fortress and is one of the largest forts in the subcontinent of India. It has huge massive walls made of stone covering a large area. The walls have 68 bastions and 12 gates. Inside the Fort is a Shahi Mosque near the Kabuli Gate. The fort was used to station an army and had no palace for the nobles of the court to live in.

Inside the Fort are three wells for water supply of the Fort calted 'Baolis' or step wells. The wells were cut deep into the limestone and had steps leading down to the water. The Baoli in the centre of the Fort was used for horses and elephants.
